Sponsorship for immigration of parents and grandparents

Requirements for sponsors:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Reside in Canada
• Be a Canadian permanent resident or citizen
• Meet a certain income requirement
• Have no criminal record, bankruptcy record, imprisonment record, no outstanding debts owed to the government/bond,
• Have not received social assistance for reasons other than disability, and have not stayed illegally in Canada, etc.
• If the spouse meets the sponsor requirements, the spouse can act as a joint sponsor, and the spouse’s income can also be included in the sponsor requirements.

Who can be sponsored:

• Biological parents/adoptive parents
• The sponsored person needs to pass a medical examination and a criminal record check.

Sponsors need to provide income for the past three years, and the income needs to reach LICO+30%. Due to the epidemic, income in 2020 and 2021 only needs to reach LICO. The income in line 150 of the annual tax assessment (Notice of Assessment NOA) is used as the basis, and the fees paid by the provincial government for guidance or training programs, provincial social assistance, payments made by the Canadian government under the resettlement assistance plan, periodic Employment Insurance (EI) income, and old-age security payments need to be deducted.

The following income can be counted as income as long as there is a record in NOA: Employment Insurance special benefits, such as maternity and parental benefits, any Employment Insurance income for the 2020 tax year, Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), other COVID-19-related temporary benefits as long as they are not part of the provincial social assistance program, paid parental leave, RSP/RRSP withdrawals.

Application process:  From 2020 to 2022, the process is to apply through a lottery system, and then wait for an invitation to be drawn.
